They are three of the biggest female pop stars in the world, so it's no surprise that Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus were determined to make their own individual marks in the fashion stakes at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards.
And the trio chose three very different ensembles at the event, with Gaga opting for a surprisingly non-eccentric PVC evening gown.
However, the 27-year-old singer did show off copious amounts of cleavage as she arrived at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday before opening the show with a performance of her latest single Applause.

'I’ve been rehearsing all week and I’m so excited,' the star told Just Jared in a pre-show interview. 'It’s been incredible dancing and singing again, doing all the things I love, so I’m having a really good time.'
Katy Perry, meanwhile, opted for a leopard print slinky dress complete with gold dragonfly embellishments and thigh-high slit.
The star teamed her Emanuel Ungaro distinctive dress with strappy black and gold sandals and a high ponytail as she stepped out at the annual event.

The 28-year-old singer's outfit was typically fitting ahead of the first live performance of her new single Roar at the end of the show, which she performed under the Brooklyn Bridge.
The star also bared her teeth in a jewelled grill while posing for photographers.
'It’s about Brooklyn. It’s about keeping it real in Brooklyn,' Katy said on the red carpet about her performance.
Roar is Katy's first single from her forthcoming third studio album Prism and has famously outsold Lady Gaga's single Applause.

Miley Cyrus was also a big draw on the carpet and wowed fans by busting out a few moves on her way into the show.
The 20-year-old We Can't Stop singer sported a pair of high waisted black leggings embellished with colourful beading and a cropped top showing off the star's toned stomach.
'Today's already the f***** best day ever! Just wait till VMAs tonight,' she wrote on her Twitter page before the show.
The singer later changed her outfit to a far more revealing number as she performed with Robin Thicke on stage., drawing gasps from the star-studded audience.

Miley's former Disney co-star Selena Gomez opted for a more glamorous look in a dark blue floor length Atelier Versace gown with a sheer cut out bustier detail.
And her good friend Taylor Swift also plumped for navy blue, looking stunning in her plunging Herve Leger by Max Azria dress, with her blonde hair curled in a vintage Hollywood style.
'Headed to the VMAs. So. Excited,' she tweeted before the ceremony.

Elsewhere, Snooki arrived looking striking in a black and silver flowing gown with typically revealing front section exposing her cleavage.
The slimline star wore her red hair in loose waves around her shoulders and happily posed with her more casually dressed boyfriend Jionni LaValle.
Her reality co-stars Jenni 'JWoww Farley and her fiancé Roger Mathews glammed up for the bash, with JWoww sporting a black and white gown.
However, their Jersey Shore co-stars Sammi 'Sweetheart' Giancola looked a little less formal with Sammi sporting a black plunging leather top and white mini skirt.

There were plenty of stars who did their best to stand out from the crowd, with Lil Kim sporting a memorable outfit of PVC black catsuit and vertiginous yellow boots, while electronica duo Daft Punk arrived in suits and their customary helmets.
British singer Rita Ora also cut a striking figure, arriving in a plunging jewelled top and spectacularly long feathered train which she needed help from a male assistant to hold while she met fans.
Fellow British songstress Ellie Golding arrived in a silver studded white floor length gown teamed with matching shoe and later looked like she was getting rather cosy with fellow Brit Ed Sheeran in the MTV audience.

The red carpet fashion was a mix of the eccentric, flesh flashing and old school glamour with the latter provided by Robin Thicke and his actress wife Paula Patton, who arrived in a strapless black shining evening gown.
Jennifer Hudson showed off her slimline figure in a houndstooth top and black leather midi skirt.
Glee star Naya Rivera also plumped for a sleek and sultry style, arriving in a floor length clinging black gown alongside her rapper boyfriend Big Sean.
Dapper: Will Smith sported a black suit and shirt, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt wore pale grey and Jimmy Fallon stuck to a suit and tie combination

One Direction stuck to their favourite casual gear, with Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malick and Harry Styles sticking to a largely monochrome palette.
The popular British boyband enjoyed a successful evening, scooping the gong for Best Song Of The Summer.
You are the best fans in the world thank you so much! We are so lucky!' tweeted Louis Tomlinson after the ceremony which also saw the band present an award.
'Thank you so much for the VMA,' Harry Styles tweeted.'You surprise us every time with your incredible support. Have a good night.'

There was plenty of co-ordination on the carpet too - Shannon Bex, Andrea Fimbres, Aubrey O'Day and Dawn Richards of girl band Danity Kane arrived in black and white ensembles.
There was also a smattering of smartly dressed male stars, with Will Smith looking dapper in a black suit and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sporting a pale grey suit and sky blue blue shirt and tie.
Will was joined by his children Willow and Jaden who looked cool and casual as they posed for photographers together, with 12-year-old Willow sporting baggy dungarees over a Runaways T-shirt.
Multiple nominations: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis capped off a successful year with six VMA nominations
An eccentric array: Vinny Guadagnino from Jersey Shore wore a black blazer and jeans, Ed Sheeran wore a leather jacket and jeans, Darren Criss sported a purple suit and Adam Lambert added to the suited brigade
A touch of TLC: Tionne Watkins, and Rozonda Thomas looked happy and relaxed as they soaked in the Brooklyn atmosphere
Young musicians: Austin Mahone, Grimes and Kendrick Lamar were all on the red carpet
Going into the show, Justin Timberlake and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis led the nominations list with six apiece.
Timberlake - who's won seven Moonman trophies - has the year's best-selling album, The 20/20 Experience, and his follow-up The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2, is due out in September.
As well as perform with his old band 'N SYNC, the star was honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the show.

Meanwhile, Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke had the next-highest number of nominations, with four. Pink and Thirty Seconds to Mars have three apiece.
The show travels to Brooklyn and the brand new Barclays Center for the first time.
It also will change the iconic Moonman trophy. MTV commissioned Brooklyn artist KAWS to redesign the statuette for this year's show.
