GB women make up for men's failure by winning relay bronze as France disqualified

Great Britain's women's 4x100 metres relay squad have been promoted to bronze after the French team were disqualified at the World Championships after the medal ceremony.

The British team, who came home in fourth place, only found out on their way to the athletes banquet after the event had finished.

The International Association of Athletics Federations confirmed the French team, who were second in the race, had been disqualified because their second baton exchange took place outside the changeover zone.

The French took their case to the jury of appeal, but it was rejected.

The news of the promotion came barely two hours after Britain's men's 4x100m team were stripped of their bronze after being disqualified over an identical issue. It meant Britain finished the championships with six medals in total.

The young quartet of Dina Asher-Smith, Ashleigh Nelson, Annabelle Lewis and Hayley Jones were initially edged out of the medals by 0.12 seconds by the United States.

Asher-Smith, 17, said: 'It means so much to us. I'm over the moon, it's such a shock.'

Jones, who ran the anchor leg, added: 'I can't even think what to say, I'm shaking right now. We were all screaming in the corridor when we found out.'

Lewis said: 'I never thought I'd be so gutted with a fourth place in the world coming into it but to get a bronze is amazing - I can't believe it.'

Nelson admitted it felt 'strange' as they didn't get to enjoy the moment and experience a lap of honour. But she added: 'It's a great feeling.'

Following on from her brilliant gold in the individual event earlier this week, Ohuruogu anchored the British team home behind winners Russia and the United States who claimed silver.

The quartet of Eilidh Child, Shana Cox, Margaret Adeoye and Ohuruogu finished in a season's best three minutes 22.61 seconds.

The team were missing the injured Perri Shakes-Drayton, who was forced to fly home on Friday after injuring her knee during the 400m hurdles final, but the strength of individual gold medallist Ohuruogu on the final lap secured a place on the podium.

Adeoye took the team from fourth to third in a strong third leg before handing on to Ohuruogu, who broke the British record to take 400m gold in thrilling fashion on Monday.

The 29-year-old still had plenty left in her legs to bring the team home more than one-and-a-half seconds ahead of fourth-placed France.

The medal takes Britain's total for the championships to four. Child, who finished fifth in the 400m hurdles final on Thursday, said: 'We all really wanted it so badly, and to go home with a medal is just brilliant.'

Adeoye added: 'I'm over the moon. I'm just very happy to take up this opportunity and I didn't want to let them down.'

Watching back at home, Shakes-Drayton tweeted: 'Yaaaaaaay yes ladies. Podium finish. Proud of you all.'

Usain Bolt won his seventh World Championship gold medal as he coasted to victory in the 200 metres at the Luzhniki Stadium on Saturday night.   

The Jamaican, also a six-time Olympic champion, added 200m gold to the 100m title he won last Sunday, dominating the field to win in 19.66secs, the fastest time in the world this year.  

Bolt's compatriot Warren Weir, 23, was second in 19.79secs, a personal best, with American Curtis Mitchell, 24, taking the bronze with a late surge in 20.04secs.

British teenager Adam Gemili, 19, finished fifth in the first senior global final, missing out on a medal by just four hundredths of a second. 

His time, 20.08secs, did not quite match the extraordinary performances of Friday, when Gemili twice broke his personal best and became the second British man to dip under 20 seconds, but the teenager's display announced him as a genuine contender on the global stage.   

Gemili said: 'I was very close to a medal - just four hundredths and I missed out on the Olympic final (in London last summer) by four hundredths as well, so it's always those fours.   

'But as I get older and stronger that will hopefully come down and down and down. Hopefully I'll be up there getting a medal in future years.'

Bolt, 26, was in the lane inside Gemili and had made the uncharacteristic gesture of shaking each of his competitors' hands on the start line, but the British athlete was not fazed. 

He just smiled, as usual, when the camera panned onto him and kept his cool when Bolt passed him and came out of the turn ahead before extending his lead down the home straight.  

Bolt ran 19.99secs in Crystal Palace just before his 19th birthday; Gemili has now clocked 19.98secs after just 18 months of serious, full-time training. 

The Jamaican also finished eighth in his first World Championship final in Helsinki in 1995, struggling to finish after suffering an injury, while Gemili has already achieved a highly creditable fifth place.   

Nobody is saying Gemili will be better than Bolt, but the signs are certainly encouraging for a British teenager who apparently has the world at his feet.

Gemili said: 'It's an unbelievable experience to be in that final on the outside Usain Bolt and just being in the top eight and finishing fifth. I'm just very proud, very happy and very grateful to be in this position.   'It was just after Bolt and the whole stadium erupted and I thought: "One day hopefully I'll be in that position." It put a smile on my face and helped me stay relaxed for my race.' 

Bolt's dominance shows no sign of abating and another victory in the 4x100m relay on Sunday will see him equal American legend Carl Lewis' record of eight world gold medals.

'I haven't really thought about that,' he said. 'I've done a lot throughout the years. 'My main goal was to make myself a legend and I solidified that at London last year.

'I'm not really worried about winning medals and counting them. 'My next big goal is to go to the Olympics and do something that has never been done before - winning the 100m and 200m.'

Mo Farah sealed his status as one of Britain’s best ever athletes tonight as he sprinted to victory in the 5,000m at the World Championships.

Farah, who also took the title in the 10,000m event last Saturday knelt down and kissed the ground after crossing the finish line in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

It is the fifth world or Olympic gold medal for the 30-year-old after he also won the 5,000m and 10,000m at last year’s Olympics and the 5,000m at the World Championships in Daegu in 2011.

Farah and American training partner Galen Rupp were the only two athletes attempting both events, with doubts cast over how successful Farah would be after only having six days to recover from the first race.

Former middle distance champion Lord Coe said earlier that if Farah won the 5,000m he would be the 'greatest British athlete of all time”.

He said: 'If Mo wins the 5,000m then you’d have to say he is the greatest British athlete of all time. He would be ahead of all of us with five global golds.

'I’d say Mo would have no equal in Britain if he goes on to achieve the double following on from his two golds in London. It would be a fantastic achievement.”

Ahead of the race, Farah told the British public: 'My message to everyone watching on TV is chill out, make a cup of tea, Mo’s on the track!”

Following his victory, a clearly elated Farah walked around the track with a Union flag draped over his shoulders before jumping up in the air in excitement.

Smiling and waving at fans, he then made his way to where his wife Tania and daughter Rihanna were sitting in the crowd, hugging them both as hundreds of camera bulbs flashed in his face.

He told the BBC: 'I never thought in my career I would achieve something like this.

'This is something I’ve worked so hard for. All I was thinking about was my kids and how much I’ve been away from them.”

He said he found the race, which saw him stay behind at first before powering to the front in the final laps, a lot harder than the earlier event.

'It was hard,” he said. 'It was a lot more hard work than the last, I put so much hard work into it.”
Farah also thanked his team and the public for the support they had given him.

'I had a lot of pressure but, at the same time, I enjoy it,” he said.

'I’m very proud to represent my country and hold the Union Jack.”

Farah became one of the top trending topics on Twitter with many taking to the site to congratulate him.

Fellow athlete Jessica Ennis wrote: 'Never in doubt! Another amazing performance! Go @Mo-Farah.”

TV presenter Clare Balding tweeted: 'Unbelievable! Mo Farah is just immense.”

The Somalia-born long-distance runner won legions of fans with his gutsy performance at London 2012, while his 'Mobot” pose became one of the most memorable images of the Games, with Usain Bolt, Robbie Williams and Boris Johnson among the many famous faces pictured mimicking it.

He topped off an eventful year by being made a CBE in the New Year Honours list but missed out on a top three position in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, having to settle for fourth place behind winner Bradley Wiggins, Jessica Ennis and Andy Murray.

His story from the poverty-stricken streets of Somalia to top flight athletics is one that serves as an inspiration, both in Britain and his place of birth.

His charity - the Mo Farah Foundation - helps to provide life-saving aid to some of the millions of people facing starvation and disease in East Africa.

Farah spends most of his time in the United States where he has been able to train away from the spotlight.

He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife Tania and three daughters, Rihanna, Aisha and Amani.

Aside from athletics, Farah’s other sporting passion is Arsenal football club.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson was disappointed with fifth place in the heptathlon on Tuesday night and that says everything about this 20-year-old’s potential to emulate, or even surpass, the achievements of Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Four personal bests — in the 200 metres, long jump, javelin and 800m — produced a  record points haul for Johnson-Thompson of 6,449, just 20 points short of Ennis-Hill’s British Under 23 mark. The Liverpool Harrier, however, still has two years to break Ennis-Hill’s records.

‘The medals will come,’ tweeted Ennis-Hill, the Olympic champion who has missed these World Championships with a left achilles injury, after Johnson-Thompson recovered from a poor performance in the shot put to challenge for bronze going into the ‘rat race’, the final 800m slog.

Johnson-Thompson said: ‘I’m a bit regretful I didn’t say I could get a medal because if I had a bit of belief in myself from the start, I could have actually had one.

‘It’s weird to think I can target medals if I just sort out my throws. They’re a bit embarrassing for me.

‘But all I really wanted was top eight, progression and a personal best and that’s what I’ve done, so I can’t complain with that.’

Olympic finalist Andrew Osagie ran another season’s best — 1min 44.36sec — to claim fifth place in the 800m after his build-up was hampered by a hamstring injury, while Eilish McColgan — daughter of former world 10,000m champion Liz — finished 10th in the final of the 3,000m steeplechase.

Perri Shakes-Drayton, however, won her 400m hurdles semi-final in style to set up a  show-down with Zuzana Hejnova, undefeated in the event all season, on Thursday. Fellow Briton Eilidh Child also made the final, but Meghan Beesley missed out, despite her personal best of 54.97sec.

There was disappointment too for Dai Greene, the defending champion in the men’s 400m hurdles, whose recent injuries saw him finish fifth in his semi-final. Sebastian Rodger and Rhys Williams also failed to qualify. Greene said: ‘It’s really frustrating. But mentally, I suppose I’ve considered losing my world title once or twice; you prepare yourself for that.’

The world long-distance double is still very much on for new 10,000m champion Mo Farah, as he cruised in his 5,000m heat yesterday to an automatic qualification spot for Friday’s final. 

Olympic bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz, meanwhile, did not suffer a single failure as he cleared 2.29m in the high jump to book his place in the final. 

Elsewhere, pole-vault world record-holder Yelena Isinbayeva succeeded where even Usain Bolt failed by enthusing the fans inside the Luzhniki Stadium. 

The Russian, 31, won her first outdoor gold medal since the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as she cleared 4.89m to send the crowd into raptures before failing all three attempts at a new world record of 5.07m.

On a captivating evening of track and field that merited far more support inside Moscow’s cavernous Luzhniki Stadium, Britain’s William Sharman finished fifth in the 110m hurdles final won by the USA’s David Oliver.

Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, 26, then ran the quickest time in the world this year, 10.71secs, to obliterate the field in the 100m final.

World Championships Day 3 highlights

Katarina Johnson-Thompson, meanwhile, began promisingly in the heptathlon in the absence of Olympic champion Jessica Ennis-Hill with 13.49secs - just a hundredth of a second off her personal best - in the 100m hurdles on Monday morning.

The 20-year-old cleared 1.83m in the high jump to leave her fourth after two events, but struggled in the shot put, her weakest discipline, recording just 11.52m. A personal best of 23.37secs in the 200m, however, left Johnson-Thompson sixth overnight.

Johnson-Thompson said: 'I had a good start in the hurdles and I'm quite happy with how I finished in the 200m, it was just the high jump and the shot put that let me down.

'I am used to the shot put letting me down, but the high jump is one of my favourite events so I was quite heartbroken that I couldn't do what I wanted to do. So I took the frustration out on the 200m and it paid off.

'I am pleased with where I am after such disastrous events.'

Johnson-Thompson had said in the build-up she felt under no pressure, despite the withdrawal of Ennis-Hill leaving her in the spotlight. She admitted, though, that she felt the Olympic champion's absence.

'It's very strange not to see her out there. She tweeted me today saying the same thing and saying good luck. Hopefully she'll be back next year and hopefully the British public have enjoyed watching me.'

Johnson-Thompson claimed experiencing London 2012 as a teenager had prepared her for anything. First thing this morning was a little different.

The Liverpool athlete was bowled over by the noise which greeted her introduction to the crowd last summer, mouthing 'wow' as she smiled the biggest grin in the stadium.

At the Luzhniki Stadium, there were barely 500 spectators in the arena to watch her hurdles race, with even fewer sticking around to see the high jump finish.

'I think I've got quite used to competing in the Olympic Stadium, I've done that in the Anniversary Games and the Olympics last year and they were the two biggest things I've ever done apart from this.

'So I think I've been quite spoilt into believing that's what major championships are like.'

Defending champion Dai Greene reached the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles along with Sebastian Rodger and Rhys Williams, but was clearly hampered by the fever he suffered over the weekend as he finished fourth in his heat in 49.79secs.

Greene, 27, said: ‘It was very difficult, very tough. It’s been a nightmare few days and we were wondering if I’d be good enough to run today. I was saying if I didn’t have any bad luck I’d have no luck at all.’

Christine Ohuruogu became world champion by the narrowest of margins, breaking the 28-year-old British 400m record, set by Kathy Smallwood-Cook at the Los Angeles Olympics.

In the most thrilling finish the Luzhniki stadium is likely to see, Ohurugu ducked at just the right time to snatch the gold medal from the clutches of Botswana’s Amantle Montsho who appeared unaware the Briton was on her shoulder. Both women clocked an identical time of 49.41sec and photo finish was required to separate them.

Ohuruogu came from 5m behind Montsho, putting in a trademark burst of speed down the final straight. The Olympic silver medallist looked beaten into second again but she kept accelerating right through the line to reclaim the world title she won in Osaka in 2007. It was in Japan six years ago that she set her previous personal best, but she is in even better shape now.

Injured Olympic long jump gold medallist Greg Rutherford tweeted:

‘I just want to shout and scream and bounce around. What an incredible race. One of Britain's greatest ever. @chrissyohuruogu is just AMAZING’

A beaming Ohuruogu then wrapped herself in the Union Jack flag and did a victory lap around the stadium.

Ohuruogu was typically slow through the first 200m and the fast starting American Natasha Hastings was in front by the first bend. But her opponents know never to count her out, even when she is fourth coming off the final bend, as she was this evening.

Ohuruogu demonstrated the scintillating form she is in by running the fourth fastest time of her life to qualify for the final easing down, while Montsho ran the second fastest time in the world this year to qualify for the final. It was expected to be a close race but nobody could have predicted just how thrillingly close it was. 

'I thank god, I am so grateful,' she told the BBC, having broken her previous personal best of 49.61s set in the 2007 world final.

'I can't believe I've done that, it feels like a dream.

'It is what I have been working towards all season, it was so tight on the line and I was so desperate to win it. I just wanted my name to come up.

'The last couple of days have been really tough and I just wanted to thank everyone who helped me. It feels really surreal and strange, it doesn't feel like I'm really here.

'I was thinking do what you can, just get over the line. The icing on the cake is the national record, that's all I wanted.

'Whatever you want just go for it, I am really happy I kept believing and trusting in what I could do.'
